JESUS UNDERGROUND DESIGN IN NEEDLEPOINT PATTERNS:

The story behind my blue and white framed needlepoint is that before leaving for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 1983, I had read a great story in "Guideposts Magazine" in which there was a very clear photo of a red and white needlepoint design. The story in the "Guideposts Magazine" said that a lady had stared for a long time at the needlepoint design on her hospital roommate’s bedside table trying to figure it out, thinking the white part was Greek letters or something. Finally, her eyes focused on the background, and she exclaimed, "Oh, it says ‘JESUS’ - I wonder why it took me so long to see that!" Her roommate said, "Oh, that’s okay, Honey, sometimes it takes people a lifetime to find JESUS!" What a punchline! I never forgot it. The photo of it in the magazine was so clear that I could count every stitch and duplicated it in the blue and white needlepoint shown above. I was then challenged by a friend who saw my needlepoint to make for her two daughters, quilted Bible tote bags with that design on it.  She'd seen my first quilted Bible tote bag that I'd made for myself that had an obscure cross design on the back of it, but her declaration that she wanted me to make her quilted tote bags with the same design on it as my needlepoint on the wall really motivated me.  I folded and cut the pattern pieces like block letters for a bulletin board originally out of my children's construction paper to spell out the design.  Then I made myself and several other ladies quilted tote bags with that design on them.  We used our quilted tote bags to conceal our Bibles when we carried them with us to underground Christian church gatherings, thus my"JESUS Underground" pattern in a quilted format was born back around 1984, and as far as I know, I was the first to develop it in a fabric-pieced and quilted item.  The original design for the needlepoint is offered here for others who want to make the needlepoint version.
